I deployed to Afghanistan in 04 with an engineering unit ( I had spent the previous 3 years+ in the grunts).  Huge surprise there was nothing really for a platoon of engineers to do over there.  I did miscellaneous guard jobs, bringing locals onto Bagram AFB to learn the western ways.  We experienced constant barrages of mortar attacks, a couple rockets and a genius who decided to storm a guard tower.
